Open House Sports Sessions with the KNUST Wellness Centre and Sports Directorate.

As part of its 2026 theme, “Promoting Wellness through Sports and Recreation,” the KNUST Wellness Centre collaborated with the University’s Sports Directorate to organize Open House sports sessions for staff and students. Before the sessions, a webinar was organized to educate members of the university community and whet their appetites for the upcoming Open House. A series of related blog posts was also published on the Centre’s website.

The first session focused on squash and took place on Thursday, 2 July 2026, from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Wellness Centre’s squash court. Led by Coach Eric of the University’s Sports Directorate, participants were educated on the health benefits and rules of squash. They then had the opportunity to practise what they had learned. The participants were excited to discover a new activity that they could include in their wellness journeys.

The second and third sessions focused on golf and were held at the Paa Joe Sports Stadium on the KNUST campus on 8 and 9 July 2026. Each session ran from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and was led by about ten coaches from the Royal Golf Club,Kumasi. Participants learned about the health benefits and rules of golf. The number of coaches available also allowed them to receive close and personalized guidance, making the sessions practical and effective.

Golf Session

At the end of the sessions, one participant shared that she had a fun time and learned that golf was not only for the wealthy. She also discovered that the sport teaches vital life skills such as emotional control, resilience in the face of failure, and patience. Another participant expressed how much she had enjoyed herself during the sessions.

The organizers were thrilled to have shared the message that wellness does not end with a healthy diet, gym workouts, and aerobics. Recreational sports such as squash and golf can also provide enjoyable ways to stay active and develop valuable life skills.

On this note, we look forward to seeing you at the KNUST Wellness Centre.
